Join us for Marine Mammal Monday - a FREE virtual program from our education experts. In honor of Sea Otter Awareness Week, we’ve teamed up with Sea Otter Savvy’s We Were Here programming to bring you this special edition of Marine Mammal Monday!
Sea otters were once found from Mexico to Alaska, including San Francisco Bay and even Japan. Hunted extensively for their luxurious fur, their population dramatically declined. Now under federal protection, current populations can be found in southern California, Alaska and even Russia. Could this rebounding population call San Francisco Bay home once more?
Sophia Lyon, M.S. and Jane Rudebusch, M.S. join host Laura Gill to share findings from their graduate research. Learn about sea otters at the northern extent of their range in California, and discover the potential for migration into areas of their historical range in San Francisco Bay and northern California.
Marine Mammal Monday presentations will be broadcast live on The Marine Mammal Center’s Facebook and YouTube channels. You do not need a Facebook or YouTube account to watch the live broadcast. Just visit the Center’s Facebook page: facebook.com/pg/TheMarineMammalCenter/videos or YouTube channel: youtube.com/MarineMammalCenter at 4pm PT on the day of the event.
